Payment Gateway Fraud Prevention
How to minimize and prevent fraudulent attempts on a Gateway
Merchants that are using online gateways are a lot more vulnerable to malicious web scammers. To prevent these scammers, set a special level of protection - right off the bat.
This article is designed to help set "fraud modules" in Payrix Gateway, BMS CHARGE and Authorize.Net for new and existing accounts.
Payrix Gateway
- Open Payrix Gateway and Go to the "Fraud Center" tab - By default, you are now in the Fraud Modules sub-tab
- To change fraud setting for ALL sources, Click "Add Module" by Universal Fraud Modules. Or to change fraud settings for one specific source, click "Add Module" next to that source only.
Note: For "BMS CHARGE" th e look will be different but the module functionality is the same. For BMS Charge check out this page.
For every account, we recommend implementing the following modules:
- Credit Card Blocker
- Duplicate Detection
- Fraud Profiler
Note:
- Block by Card Country/Country Blocker modules may be useful for merchants experiencing spam attempts from countries outside of their normal acceptance.
- We do not recommend blocking transactions with the Transaction Amount module because this may lead to large transaction amounts from the scammer which can be far more detrimental than the typical $1.00 attempts.
For Payment Forms on Payrix (USAePay)
We recommend implementing the following modules:
- AVS Response
Note:
- Merchants that do not take full AVS information but take billing zip codes can use the Zip Code Verifier module in console 2.
- Always enable the Precheck to prevent a transaction from reaching the Global authorization server.
- Card ID Checker
- Multiple Credit Cards
- Required Fields (if there are additional fields aside from AVS and Card ID being required)
Authorize.net
Log in to your Authorize.Net
Authorize.net features an Advanced Fraud Detection Suite which can be found by clicking TOOLS > Fraud Detection Suite > Setup Wizard.
Prevalent options here are Velocity Filters, IP Filters, Transaction Filters, AVS Filters, CCV and Shipping Filters.
Note: Authorize.net allows merchants to hold transactions without authorizations. This allows you to manually review a transaction and determine whether you want to accept it or not - without incurring authorization costs.
Velocity Filters
Limit the number of transactions allowed per day or per hour to identify high-volume fraud.
IP Filter
Block activity based on IP Address, IP region or address, IP transaction velocity, and designate specific server IP addresses that are authorized to submit transactions.
Transaction Filters
Validate credit card information before processing, set thresholds based on amounts, or flag suspicious activity based on Authorize.net's criteria.
AVS Filter
Enhanced handling of AVS results (Address Verification)
CCV
Extra security filter for the three or four digit 'security code' (CCV)
Shipping Filters
Identify shipping-billing mismatches, use Shipping Address Verification, and Enhanced AVS Handling to flag suspicious transactions.
Note: Shipping filters do not apply to most merchants but can be used for online shopping carts with product delivery
